Competitiveness

Aviation is a global market. The European aeronautics industry has customers but also competitors from all around the world. EU regulation that concerns the aeronautics industry must therefore account for its impact on the competitiveness of European companies. As Europe strives to achieve net-zero aviation, it must also ensure a level-playing field for its aeronautics industry.

Unlike the commercial aviation sector, the defence sector follows a different market logic. Defence usually has a single buyer per country: the national government and its military. But the European defence industry also faces global competition, as European governments sometimes purchase ready-made defence equipment from third-countries that have closed or restricted defence markets. This raises crucial questions about how to maintain the competitiveness of the European defence industry, especially in light of the changing security situation in Europe.
