Complementarity of Sustainable Aviation Fuels and Hydrogen

ASD charts a greener course for aviation decarbonisation, blending sustainable aviation fuels and hydrogen. Explore ambitious targets and recommendations for a sustainable future in air travel.

Decarbonising aviation demands diverse low-carbon energy pathways, and ASD believes in the complementarity of sustainable aviation fuels and hydrogen. Biomass and waste-based fuels offer immediate solutions, allowing for the decarbonisation of existing fleets. Simultaneously, hydrogen, sourced sustainably, holds the potential to revolutionize short-medium range aircraft.

Members of ASD are joining forces with their stakeholders to develop opportunities to make aviation sustainable in the future in a way that is fully consistent with European ambitions on climate.

ASD's recommendations

  • Set an ambitious target of at least 10% SAF incorporation by 2030 through initiatives like Refuel EU Aviation.
  • Advocate for a 2.5% sub-mandate on 'e-fuels' to harness Power-to-Liquid technologies.
  • Ensure regulatory framework evolutions to stimulate SAF off-takes and create a favorable ecosystem for hydrogen deployment.
  • Establish a European industrial alliance for sustainable aviation fuels and support the Clean Hydrogen Alliance.
  • Emphasise strict sustainability criteria for SAF raw materials, harmonised at the ICAO level.
  • Develop alternative fuels infrastructure, including Hydrogen Hubs at airports for a seamless transition to greener energy.
