Protecting democracy
European strength in innovation
The Russian war of aggression against Ukraine shows that peace and freedom can never be taken for granted. European values and the security of our citizens are not a given – Europe must be ready and able to defend them. The European defence industry provides the means to do this.
The core mission of our armed forces is to protect national territory – or the territory of our allies – against external threats. They also play crucial roles in responding to natural or man-made disasters, offering essential support, and contributing to broader foreign policy objectives through crisis interventions abroad that help protect our safety.
For armed forces to fulfil their role as protectors of our security, they must be equipped with advanced technology. The European defence industry has the expertise needed to develop, produce and maintain such equipment. By providing state-of-the-art equipment, we empower our military personnel to carry out their missions safely and with confidence.
To remain a place of peace, freedom and democracy, Europe needs to have an efficient and competitive indigenous defence industry
While defence equipment could be sourced from non-European companies, a reliance on external providers poses significant risks. In times of crisis, war or political tensions, disruptions may hinder the supply of needed equipment. And, off-the-shelf technology from abroad may not be suited to the specific needs of European armed forces, and come with limitations that impede their use.
Making competitive defence products in Europe not only mitigates these risks but also bolsters the negotiating position of European countries in dealings with non-European suppliers. This approach ensures a more secure and self-reliant defence infrastructure, crucial for maintaining sovereignty and protecting our democracy.
The capacity of Europe to defend itself is intricately linked to its defence industrial capabilities. By investing in and supporting a robust indigenous defence industry, Europe ensures it remains resilient in the face of evolving challenges, and continues to be a place of peace, freedom and democracy.
